Folkbomb explosion aftermath

We really jazzed it up for the first hour, transitioning to other genres with a Sharon Jones track. Somebody called in to reprimand me about some dead air when I came back from a bathroom break. That bummed me out. Being on the radio is the best, though, and I picked myself off, dusted myself off, and played some Flaming Lips.

Today, we heard:

McCoy Tyner // Blues for Gwen
Artie Shaw // I've Got My Eye on You
Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass // Beautiful Friend
Gary Burton // The Sound of Music
Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers // Ecaroh
Sidney Bechet & Mezz Mezzarow // Breathless Blues
Benny Carter & His Orchestra // Cotton Tail
Keith Jarrett & Charlie Haden // No Moon at All
Donald Byrd // Elijah
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings // Give it Back
Tame Impala // Alter Ego
Blue Shadows // On the Floor of Heaven
Dan Mangan // Above the Headlights
Icarus Himself // Digging Holes
Flaming Lips & Stardeath & White Dwarfs // On the Run
Steve Mason // The Letter
Minus the Bear // Secret Country
Villagers // Becoming a Jackal
Serena Maneesh // I Just Want to See Your Face
Young Galaxy // Disposable Times
Jon & Roy // Any Day Now
The Burning Hell // When the World Ends
Baths // Aminals
Delorean // Endless Sunset
Pigeonhole ft Moka Only & Itchy Ron // Looptape

I spoke to Mathias Kom, of the Burning Hell, yesterday at Folkfest. That interview aired this morning. Their website can be found here: http://www.wearetheburninghell.com

That's it for me today. Time to do some editing and ride the bike home.

In awe of the axes

This is a really neat site. Kind of a like a Canadian Blogotheque. Lovely, lonely, handmade videos for a variety of Canadian artists from here, there, and all those provinces you've never visited. Brought to my attention by Mathias Kom of the Burning Hell.

Today's high points were the steel drum-laced Hindou track from El Guincho, and a couple of surprise quiet songs from Emma Tricca (who is she??) and Good Old War. The low points were not worth mentioning, save to say that folk music is like a brambly forest, at first you are having a lovely walk through, and suddenly you are entangled in a scratchy, prickly, unpleasant and high-pitched whinging sort of bush from which there is no escape, until the stupid song finishes and you can put on another.

Eric Dolphy // Something Sweet, Something Tender
Charles Mingus // Better Get Hit in Yo Soul**
The Modern Jazz Quartet // The Cylinder
Stan Getz // The Telephone Song**
Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane // Trinkle, Tinkle
Milt Jackson // Ain't Misbehavin'
St Vincent // Now, Now
Melaena Cadiz // Rattle the Windows
Geoff Muldaur & the Texas Sheiks // The World is Going Wrong
Konono No. 1 // Mama Na Bana
Tim Hus // Canadian Pacific
Women // Eyesore
Annie Lou // Spit and Polish
Laurie Anderson // Dark Time in the Revolution
Iron & Wine // Innocent Bones**
Washed Out // New Theory**
Family Trees // Dream Talkin'**
Kisses // People Can Do the Most Amazing Things
Buck 65 - Lee - Lovitz // Wake Up Quack
El Guincho // Hindou**
Beautiful Swimmers // Big Coast
Ketch Harbou Wolves // Breakdown
Kid Cudi, Best Coast & Rostram of Vampire Weekend // All Summer
Good Old War // That's Some Dream
Emma Tricca // Blind Time**
Panda Bear // Take Pills
Jake & the Leprechauns // Bowhead Song

That's it for today, forest wanderers. There are too few weeks left and I don't know what I'm gonna do when I can't be on the radio anymore.

A Primer on Photography from a Guy Named Pepe

The photography that Pepe Karmel is writing about in this article may be interesting in itself, but what I enjoyed about this particular piece of internet rag is how much one can learn about the merits, shall we say, of different styles of photography. I guess photography is similar to poetry in that the medium originated with much attention to form, and later, looser styles emerged with a cacophony of debate around their particular advantages etc.

Check this thing out and see if you don't learn anything:
